EurovisionBetsandPieces: One Eurovision Data analysis to rule them all! (Semi Finals Part 3)

This is the third and final part of the Semi Finals analysis and will be focused on the 2nd Semi Final. Rehearsals are almost around the corner and things will start heating up. The posts will start coming on a daily basis so stay tunned and also follow https://twitter.com/eurovisionbets  on Twitter and on  Facebook as well for any updates.

Semi Final 2

1. Armenia

Q: 9/11
Current Streak: 1 Q
Running Order record: 6/12 Q , Current Streak: 1 NQ

14a: 4th / 223 pts, TV: 4th/121 - J: 4th/102
15a: 7th / 134 pts,  TV: 6th/80 - J: 11th/54
16a: 2nd / 243 pts,   TV: 4th/ 116 - J: 3rd/127
17a: 7th / 152 pts,  TV: 7th/65 - J: 6th/87
18b: 15th / 79 pts,  TV: 14th/41 - J: 14th/38

Average: 7th / 17.4 Contestants, 166.2 pts
Average TV: 7th / 84.6 pts
Average J: 7.6th / 81.6 pts

A balanced presence for Armenia for the last 5 years, getting points from both sides. I do believe that Armenia will be in trouble this year because of  its early spot and will need all possible support to qualify. It gives me some Israel 2014 vibes. Has enough support on the semi but with all the favorites coming after it will be marginal.

2. Ireland

Q: 6/13
Current Streak: 1 Q
Running Order record: 4/12 Q , Current Streak: 3 NQ

14b: 13th / 80 pts, TV: 10th/47 - J: 14th/33
15b: 12th / 98 pts,  TV: 16th/14 - J: 7th/84
16b: 15th / 46 pts,   TV: 14th/ 31 - J: 16th/15
17b: 13th / 86 pts,  TV: 12th/41 - J: 12th/45
18a: 6th / 179 pts,  TV: 6th/108 - J: 8th/71

Average: 11.8th / 17.4 Contestants, 97.8 pts
Average TV: 11.6th / 48.2 pts
Average J: 11.4th / 49.6 pts

Another balanced country, not that it will be relevant this year. Ireland is destined to return to its previous mediocre results after last year's success. Probably will score better with the public but not enough to boost its qualifying chances.

3. Moldova

Q: 9/13
Current Streak: 2 Q
Running Order record: 5/12 Q , Current Streak: 3 Q

14a: 16th / 39 pts, TV: 15th/14 - J: 15th/24
15a: 12th / 94  pts,  TV: 11th/48 - J: 13th/46
16a: 17th / 33 pts,   TV: 18th/9 - J: 15th/24
17a: 2nd / 291 pts,  TV: 2nd/180 - J: 4th/111
18b: 3rd / 235 pts,  TV: 2nd/153 - J: 7th/82

Average: 10th / 17.2 Contestants, 138.4 pts
Average TV: 9.6th / 80.8 pts
Average J: 10.8th / 58.2 pts

Moldova is one of the countries that have found the recipe for success but this year denies to use in its favor. Whenever they are sending a feel good kind of comical song not only they qualify but they finish in Top-10 or higher. This year they have taken a different direction and they will pay the cost. Televoting is their power but this year they have to rely on juries for a good result and i cannot see that happening.

4. Switzerland

Q: 3/14
Current Streak: 4 NQ
Running Order record: 5/12 Q , Current Streak: 4 NQ

14b: 7th / 149 pts, TV: 4th/98 - J: 10th/51
15b: 17th / 21  pts,  TV: 17th/6 - J: 14th/15
16b: 18th / 28 pts,   TV: 18th/3 - J: 14th/25
17b: 12th / 97 pts,  TV: 10th/49 - J: 11th/48
18a: 13th / 86 pts,  TV: 15th/27 - J: 10th/59

Average: 13.4th / 17.4 Contestants, 76.2 pts
Average TV: 12.8th / 36.6 pts
Average J: 11.8th / 39.6 pts

One of the worst possible combinations that proves that numbers do not mean anything if you have a strong song. Switzerland with one the weakest qulifying records and the 2nd worst streak of  non qualifications in one of the worst possible slots with the current longest non qualifying streak! And still, Switzerland will sail to the final. Will definitely score better with the televoters but difficult to secure a Top-3 ranking from that order.

5. Latvia

Q: 5/14
Current Streak: 2 NQ
Running Order record: 9/12 Q , Current Streak: 4 Q

14a: 14th / 67 pts, TV: 13th/40 - J: 12th/27
15b: 3rd / 271  pts,  TV: 3rd/116 - J: 2nd/155
16b: 8th / 132 pts,   TV: 7th/68 - J: 8th/64
17a: 18th / 21 pts,  TV: 17th/20 - J: 18th/1
18b: 12th / 106 pts,  TV: 15th/14 - J: 6th/92

Average: 11th / 17.4 Contestants, 119.4 pts
Average TV: 11th / 51.6 pts
Average J: 9.2th / 67.8 pts

Latvia tends to score better with Juries and that is a plus for this year. They have enough allies as well on the semi, the song has some quality but can easily see it having a similar result to last year. I strongly believe that 80-85 points is its ceiling and will not be enough to send it to the final.

6. Romania

Q: 10/11
Current Streak: 1 NQ
Running Order record: 9/12 Q , Current Streak: 1 NQ

14b: 2nd / 225  pts,  TV: 2nd/126 -  J: 5th/99
15a: 5th / 159 pts,   TV: 5th/93 - J: 8th/64
17b: 6th / 174 pts,  TV: 3rd/148 - J: 15th/26
18b: 11th / 107 pts,  TV: 13th/40 - J: 9th/67

Average: 6th / 16.8 Contestants, 166.3 pts
Average TV: 5.8th / 101.8 pts
Average J: 9.3th / 64 pts

Romania will need its televoting power to qualify and this is making things difficult. A song that suffered on its own national final with televoting will struggle on that semi, unless the Romanian diaspora will back it heavily but even then it will be tough.

7. Denmark

Q: 9/13
Current Streak: 2 Q
Running Order record: 7/12 Q , Current Streak: 3 Q

15a: 14th / 74  pts,  TV: 14th/23 - J: 12th/51
16b: 17th / 34 pts,   TV: 15th/24 - J: 17th/10
17b: 10th / 101 pts,  TV: 16th/5 - J: 5th/96
18b: 5th / 204 pts,  TV: 1st/164 - J: 12th/40

Average: 11.5th / 17.5 Contestants, 103.3 pts
Average TV: 11.5th / 54 pts
Average J: 11.5th / 49.3 pts

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde of the Eurovision Semis! Made it to the final twice in a row even though it finished 16th with the televoting on 2017 getting just 5 points! 2018 focused on the televoting and finished 1st but managed only a 12th place with the Juries! In 2019 I reckon that things will be more balanced. Qualitywise Denmark can get points both from televoting and juries, though Norway will defnitely affect its televoting result and Sweden its jury result. For the moment i give it a 60% to qualify.

8. Sweden

Q: 9/10
Current Streak: 8 Q
Running Order record: 7/12 Q , Current Streak: 1 Q

14a: 3rd/ 247 pts, TV: 3rd/122 - J: 2nd/125
15b: 1st / 403  pts,  TV: 1st/195 - J: 1st/208
17a: 3rd / 227 pts,  TV: 4th/103 - J: 3rd/124
18b: 2nd / 254 pts,  TV: 6th/83 - J: 1st/171

Average: 2.5th / 17.3 Contestants, 282.8 pts
Average TV: 3.5th / 125.8 pts
Average J: 1.8th / 157 pts

Somewhere in a parallel universe Sweden might not qualify to the final. Its jury performance the last 5 years is astonishing never failing to land outside the Top-3. There is a pattern also with the televoting that i strongly believe that will continue this year, maybe not on the semi but definitely on the final. Televoting wise the late Swedish song do not have the same appeal that they used to have.

9. Austria

Q: 5/9
Current Streak: 5 Q
Running Order record: 9/12 Q , Current Streak: 2 Q

15b: 1st / 303  pts,  TV: 1st/165 -  J: 1st/138
16a: 7th / 170 pts,   TV: 2nd/133 - J: 11th/37
17b: 7th / 147 pts,  TV: 14th/32 - J: 4th/115
18a: 4th / 231 pts,  TV: 5th/72 - J: 2nd/115

Average: 4.8th / 17.5 Contestants, 212.8 pts
Average TV: 5.5th / 111.5 pts
Average J: 4.5th / 101.3 pts

Austria has built a very good streak of qualifications that unfortunately will stop this year. Personally i find the song interesting but it will fail both with the juries and televoting. Coming after Sweden as well does not make it any easier. Will definitely score better with juries.

10. Croatia

Q: 6/12
Current Streak: 1 NQ
Running Order record: 8/12 Q , Current Streak: 1 Q

16a: 10th / 133 pts,   TV: 10th/53 - J: 7th/80
17b: 8th / 141 pts,  TV: 5th/104 - J: 13th/37
18a: 17th / 63 pts,  TV: 17th/17 - J: 13th/46

Average: 11.7th / 18.7 Contestants, 112.3 pts
Average TV: 10.7th / 58 pts
Average J: 11th / 54.3 pts

Another case where numbers do not give us a single clue about this year. Croatia will be lucky if it will not finish last.

11. Malta

Q: 6/13
Current Streak: 2 NQ
Running Order record: 6/12 Q , Current Streak: 2 NQ

14b: 6th/ 149 pts, TV: 12th/36 - J: 3rd/113
15b: 9th / 116  pts,  TV: 12th/32 - J: 5th/84
16a: 3rd / 209 pts,   TV: 9th/54 - J: 1st/155
17b: 16th/ 55 pts,  TV: 18th/0 - J: 8th/55
18b: 13th / 101 pts,  TV: 18th/8 - J: 5th/93

Average: 9.2th / 17.2 Contestants, 128.8 pts
Average TV: 13.8th / 26 pts
Average J: 4.4th / 100 pts

Do it like Malta! For every point that it takes from the public, Malta takes four from the juries! Something that will definitely help their chances this year because of its televoting dependant song. One of the reasons that i have Malta as definite Top-10 on the final.

12. Lithuania

Q: 8/14
Current Streak: 1 Q
Running Order record: 9/12 Q , Current Streak: 2 NQ

14b: 12th/ 85 pts, TV: 11th/44 - J: 11th/41
15b: 7th / 150  pts,  TV: 6th/32 - J: 10th/52
16b: 4th / 222 pts,   TV: 6th/118 - J: 5th/104
17b: 17th/ 42 pts,  TV: 15th/25 - J: 16th/17
18a: 9th / 119 pts,  TV: 9th/62 - J: 11th/57

Average: 9.8th / 17.2 Contestants, 123.6 pts
Average TV: 9.4th / 69.4 pts
Average J: 10.6th / 54.2 pts

Lithuania will be mostly affected by its running order and not its history with televoting and juries. Has enough allies to get some help but will suffer sandwiched between Malta and Russia.

13. Russia

Q: 9/10
Current Streak: 1 NQ
Running Order record: 6/12 Q , Current Streak: 2 NQ

14a: 7th/ 130 pts, TV: 6th/73 - J: 11th/57
15a: 1st/ 304  pts,  TV: 1st/145 - J: 1st/159
16a: 1st / 342 pts,   TV: 1st/194 - J: 2nd/148
18a: 15th / 65 pts,  TV: 11th/51 - J: 16th/14

Average: 6th / 17 Contestants, 201.3 pts
Average TV: 4.8th / 115.8 pts
Average J: 7.5th / 94.8 pts

Russia traditionally suffers with the Juries and focused on that part this year. What we need to see is what kind of show they will stage in order to keep the televoters happy. They won't have any problem to qualify. The focus is on the final.

14. Albania

Q: 7/14
Current Streak: 1 Q
Running Order record: 6/12 Q , Current Streak: 2 NQ

14a: 11th/ 87 pts, TV: 14th/23 - J: 9th/64
15a: 8th/ 127  pts,  TV: 8th/66 - J: 9th/61
16b: 16th / 45 pts,   TV: 12th/35 - J: 18th/10
17a: 14th/ 76 pts,  TV: 12th/38 - J: 14th/38
18a: 8th / 162 pts,  TV: 11th/48 - J: 3rd/114

Average: 11.4th / 17.4 Contestants, 99.4 pts
Average TV: 11.4th / 42 pts
Average J: 10.6th / 57.4 pts

Albania will rely on Juries and diaspora one more time. It's a 50-50 call and my gutt says it will be 11th on that semi. There is still hope.

15. Norway

Q: 9/12
Current Streak: 2 Q
Running Order record: 10/12 Q , Current Streak: 4 Q

14b: 4th/ 155 pts, TV: 8th/55 - J: 4th/100
15b: 4th/ 248  pts,  TV: 5th/104 - J: 3rd/144
16b: 13th/ 63 pts,  TV: 13th/34 - J: 13th/29
17b: 5th/ 189 pts,  TV: 8th/52 - J: 3rd/137
18b: 1st / 266 pts,  TV: 3rd/133 - J: 2nd/133

Average: 5.8th / 17.2 Contestants, 184.2 pts
Average TV: 7.4th / 75.6 pts
Average J: 5th / 108.6 pts

Norway is the first country ever to win a semi, even though it hasn't won  the  televoting or the juries and that happened last year (2nd and 3rd). It is one of the songs that gives me different vibes. It is my main candidate for a shocker non qualifier. Waiting to see the rehearsal.

16. Netherlands

Q: 6/15
Current Streak: 3 Q
Running Order record: 5/11 Q , Current Streak: 3 NQ

14a: 1st/ 277 pts, TV: 1st/147 - J: 1st/130
15a: 13th/ 93  pts,  TV: 15th/23 - J: 5th/70
16a: 5th / 197 pts,   TV: 5th/95 - J: 5th/102
17b: 4th/ 200 pts,  TV: 9th/51 - J: 2nd/149
18b: 7th / 174 pts,  TV: 12th/47 - J: 4th/127

Average: 6th / 17.2 Contestants, 188.2 pts
Average TV: 8.4th / 72.6 pts
Average J: 3.4th / 115.6 pts

Nothing to add here! Being after Russia and Switzerlad is helpful but the focus is the final. Will it get the momentum needed? Few days left to find out!

17. North Macedonia

Q: 5/15
Current Streak: 6 NQ
Running Order record: 3/8 Q , Current Streak: 1 Q

14b: 11th/ 98 pts, TV: 13th/28 - J: 7th/70
15a: 15th/ 64  pts,  TV: 16th/22 - J: 15th/42
16b: 11th / 88 pts,   TV: 8th/54 - J: 11th/34
17b: 15th/ 69 pts,  TV: 13th/40 - J: 14th/29
18a: 18th / 24 pts,  TV: 18th/6 - J: 18th/18

Average: 14th / 17.2 Contestants, 68.6 pts
Average TV: 11.2th / 30 pts
Average J: 13th / 38.6 pts

If not this year then when? Producers tried to help as much as possible and Macedonia has a decent song that can be helped both from juries and televoting. Staging is always a problem for their delegation and will be the key factor. If they fail again the only option in the future will be to hire famous artists to represent their country.

18. Azerbaijan

Q: 9/10
Current Streak: 1 NQ
Running Order record: 5/6 Q , Current Streak: 3 Q

14a: 6th/ 135 pts, TV: 11th/41 - J: 5th/94
15b: 11th/ 104  pts,  TV: 11th/37 - J: 9th/67
16a: 6th / 185 pts,   TV: 7th/93 - J: 6th/92
17a: 8th/ 150 pts,  TV: 8th/63 - J: 5th/87
18a: 11th / 94 pts,  TV: 12th/47 - J: 11th/47

Average: 8.4th / 17.6 Contestants, 133.6 pts
Average TV: 9.8th / 56.2 pts
Average J: 7.2th / 77.4 pts

Pimp slot on the 2nd semi is the perfect boost for a Top-3 in the semi and a Top-10 finishing at the final. Azerbaijan has the potential to tick both boxes. Sailing to the final.

After all the technical analysis, the next post will be focused on the betting part of the contest. After all, this is all this blog is about. I hope you find my data useful for your bets and would like to hear your opinions and thoughts about this year.

EurovisionBetsandPieces: One Eurovision Data analysis to rule them all! (Semi Finals Part 2)

On the first part of my analysis I have examined how the 50% Juries and 50% Televoting era is affecting the Semi Results, I have checked how the running order affects the rankings and also the amount of points that a country needs to qualify to the final.

This post will examine the split voting for the Top-3 of the semis and the minimum requirements to secure a Semi Final win. A small reminder that I have implemented the current voting system to the 2014 and 2015 semis, since we have the data available. There are some interesting findings that I would like to share with you.

Norway 2018 is the first country ever that wins a Semi even though it finished 3rd with the Televoting (133 points) and 2nd with the Juries (133 points as well)!

In 6 occasions the winner of the Semi won both Televoting and Juries (Netherlands 2014, Austria 2014, Russia 2015, Sweden 2015, Portugal2017 and Bulgaria 2017)

In an occasion the winner of the Televoting finished 2nd with the Juries (Russia 2016) and at another occasion the winner of the Juries ranked 2nd with the Televoting (Australia 2016).

2018 gave two more remarkable findings apart from Norway's victory. Israel is the only country that secured the win even though it failed to be Top-3 with the Televoting, finishing 4th with 116 points. The other interesting fact is that in Semi 2, the televoting winnner (Denmark 164 points and 204 in total) failed to secure a Top-3 result ending up 5th.

I do not know if 2018 is a sign of a new tendency where Jurors tend to disagree with the public, but it is a fact that these two where the two toughest semis so far.

2018 - 1st

1. Israel 283 pts: Televoting - 4th , Juries - 1st
2. Cyprus 262 pts: Televotning - 1st, Juries - 6th
3. Czechia 232 pts: Televoting - 2nd , Juries - 5th

Point Differential: 21 / 2nd closest

2018 - 2nd

1. Norway 266 pts: Televoting - 3rd, Juries - 2nd
2. Sweden 254 pts: Televoting - 6th, Juries - 1st
3. Moldova 235 pts: Televoting - 2nd, Juries - 7th

Point Differential: 12 / Closest ever with the current system

It will be very interesting to see how 2019 folds out...

The second and biggest part of this post will examine the behavior of each country for the last 5 years with the 50/50 system and their records in semis and will try to identify patterns. And the countdown begins...

Semi Final 1

1. Cyprus

Q: 7/13
Current Streak: 4 Q
Running Order record: 6/12 Q , Current Streak: 1 Q

15b: 6th / 156 pts,  TV: 8th/80 - J: 8th/76
16a: 8th / 164 pts,   TV: 6th/ 93 - J: 9th/71
17a: 5th / 164 pts,  TV: 5th/103-  J: 10th/61
18a: 2nd / 262 pts,  TV: 1st/173 - J: 6th/89

Average: 5.3th / 18 Contestants, 186.5 pts
Average TV: 5th / 112.3 pts
Average J: 8.3th / 74.3 pts

Cyprus is doing slightly better with the Televoting because of the nature of its songs and this year I am expecting a similar result. Lots of friends and allies as well will guarantee high rankings in both categories.

2. Montenegro

Q: 2/10
Current Streak: 3 NQ
Running Order record: 4/12 Q , Current Streak: 3 NQ

14a: 9th / 117 pts, TV: 10th/43 - J: 7th/74
15b: 10th / 105 pts,  TV: 9th/58 - J: 11th/47
16a: 13th / 60 pts,   TV: 17th/ 14 - J: 10th/46
17a: 16th / 56 pts,  TV: 11th/39 - J: 16th/17
18b: 16th / 40 pts,  TV: 14th/17 - J: 14th/23

Average: 12.8th / 17.4 Contestants, 75.6 pts
Average TV: 12.2th / 34.2 pts
Average J: 11.6th / 41.4 pts

Montenegro is always strugglingon both sides of the board and probably this will be the case this year as well. I  predict that it will get a few extra points on its televoting this year because of Serbia's presence but expect a similar result of the previous two years.

3. Finland

Q: 7/14
Current Streak: 1 Q
Running Order record: 5/12 Q , Current Streak: 3 Q

14b: 3rd / 180 pts, TV: 7th/63 - J: 2nd/117
15a: 16th / 52  pts,  TV: 10th/51 - J: 16th/1
16a: 15th / 51 pts,   TV: 15th/16 - J: 12th/35
17a: 12th / 92 pts,  TV: 10th/51 - J: 12th/41
18b: 10th / 108 pts,  TV: 7th/73 - J: 15th/35

Average: 11.2th / 17.2 Contestants, 96.6 pts
Average TV: 9.8th / 50.8 pts
Average J: 11.4th / 45.8 pts

Mixed results for Finland that tends to do slightly better with the televoting. Interesting fact though that back in 2017 failed to qualify because of the Juries' scores, even though it was considered to have a jury friendly song and the opposite was the case back in 2014. Difficult year ahead with Estonia and Estonia the only countries that can give some support.

4. Poland

Q: 5/12
Current Streak: 1 NQ
Running Order record: 5/12 Q , Current Streak: 4 NQ

14b: 5th / 150 pts, TV: 3rd/116 - J: 12th/34
15b: 8th / 124  pts,  TV: 4th/114 - J: 16th/10
16b: 6th / 151 pts,   TV: 4th/131 - J: 15th/20
17a: 9th / 119 pts,  TV: 6th/69 - J: 11th/50
18b: 14th / 81 pts,  TV: 10th/60 - J: 15th/21

Average: 8.4th / 17.2 Contestants, 125 pts
Average TV: 5.4th / 98 pts
Average J: 13.8th / 27 pts

Poland is the definition of a case study! Never failed to miss Top-10 with Televoting, never made it with the Juries! The question is if the Polish diaspora will back their song. My answer would be that this year they will definitely vote for their song and help it qualify to the final. The running order is not on their side but if they can secure 40-45 jury points, they will sail to the final.

5. Slovenia

Q: 5/15
Current Streak: 1 Q
Running Order record: 9/12 Q , Current Streak: 4 Q

14b: 10th / 108 pts, TV: 9th/48 - J: 8th/60
15b: 5th / 179  pts,  TV: 7th/95 - J: 6th/84
16b: 14th / 57 pts,   TV: 17th/8 - J: 10th/45
17a: 17th / 36 pts,  TV: 16th/20 - J: 17th/16
18b: 8th / 132 pts,  TV: 9th/65 - J: 8th/67

Average: 10.8th / 17.2 Contestants, 102.4 pts
Average TV: 11.6th / 47.2 pts
Average J: 9.8th / 54.4 pts

Slovenia tends to score better with the juries but their songs tend to be balanced and score more or less the same amount of points on both boards. Slovenia also has one of the best running orders of the first half. I have a feeling that will score slighlty better with the juries and will qualify to the final.

6. Czechia

Q: 2/7
Current Streak: 1 Q
Running Order record: 9/12 Q , Current Streak: 1 NQ

15b: 13th / 85  pts,  TV: 10th/51 -  J: 12th/34
16a: 9th / 161 pts,   TV: 12th/41 - J: 4th/120
17a: 13th / 83 pts,  TV: 18th/2 - J: 7th/81
18b: 3rd / 232 pts,  TV: 2nd/134 - J: 5th/98

Average: 9.5th / 18 Contestants, 140.3 pts
Average TV: 10.5th / 57 pts
Average J: 7th / 83.3 pts

Czechia was heavily dependant on the juries to secure a good result and last year changed direction and had the best result ever. This year is coming back with the same recipe hoping to qualify and maybe sneak in the Top-10.

7. Hungary

Q: 10/12
Current Streak: 8 Q
Running Order record: 7/12 Q , Current Streak: 3 Q

14a: 2nd / 247 pts, TV: 2nd/125 - J: 3rd/122
15a: 10th / 113  pts,  TV: 12th/45 - J: 6th/68
16a: 4th / 197 pts,   TV: 3rd/119 - J: 8th/78
17b: 2nd / 231 pts,  TV: 2nd/165 - J: 7th/66
18b: 10th / 111 pts,  TV: 5th/88 - J: 13th/23

Average: 5,6th / 17.2 Contestants, 179.8 pts
Average TV: 4.8th / 108.4 pts
Average J: 7.4th / 71.4 pts

Believe it or not, Hungary has the longest qualifying streak with 8 years in a raw! Tends to score better with televoting but i think that this year their points will  be more balanced. Can they make it?

8. Belarus

Q: 5/15
Current Streak: 1 NQ
Running Order record: 7/12 Q , Current Streak: 1 Q

14b: 4th/ 157 pts, TV: 6th/86 - J: 6th/71
15a: 11th / 97  pts,  TV: 13th/32 - J: 7th/65
16b: 12th / 84 pts,   TV: 9th/59 - J: 12th/32
17b: 9th / 110 pts,  TV: 7th/55 - J: 9th/55
18a: 16th / 65 pts,  TV: 13th/45 - J: 17th/20

Average: 10.4th / 17.2 Contestants, 102.6 pts
Average TV: 9.6th / 54 pts
Average J: 10.2th / 48.6 pts

Mixed results for Belarus. Will definitely score better with the public this year but cannot see where they will find the points to qualify.

9. Serbia

Q: 7/10
Current Streak: 1 Q
Running Order record: 9/12 Q , Current Streak: 2 Q

15a: 9th / 121  pts,  TV: 7th/78 -  J: 14th/43
16b: 10th / 105 pts,   TV: 10th/50 - J: 9th/55
17b: 11th / 98 pts,  TV: 11th/45 - J: 10th/53
18b: 9th / 117 pts,  TV: 8th/72 - J: 11th/45

Average: 9.8th / 17.5 Contestants, 110.3 pts
Average TV: 9th / 61.3 pts
Average J: 11th / 49 pts

Juries tried to 'penalize' Serbia twice but it finaly made it to the final. Televoting though prevented them qualifying in 2017. Marginal qualifications and disqualifications. Interested to see what will happen this year.

10. Belgium

Q: 5/14
Current Streak: 1 NQ
Running Order record: 8/12 Q , Current Streak: 1 Q

14a: 15th/ 65 pts, TV: 12th/41 - J: 14th/24
15a: 2nd / 251  pts,  TV: 3rd/112 - J: 2nd/139
16b: 3rd / 274 pts,   TV: 3rd/135 - J: 2nd/139
17a: 4th / 165 pts,  TV: 3rd/125 - J: 13th/40
18a: 12th / 91 pts,  TV: 16th/20 - J: 9th/71

Average: 7.2th / 17.4 Contestants, 169.2 pts
Average TV: 7.4th / 86.6 pts
Average J: 8th / 83.2 pts

The situation is balanced for Belgium. Last year public forced them to miss the final and back in 2017 jurors had it 13th while televoters 3rd. My prediction for this year is that it will score better with juries.

11. Georgia

Q: 7/11
Current Streak: 2 NQ
Running Order record: 6/12 Q , Current Streak: 2 NQ

14b: 15th/ 48 pts, TV: 15th/15 - J: 13th/33
15a: 4th / 186  pts,  TV: 4th/96 - J: 3rd/90
16b: 9th / 123 pts,   TV: 11th/39 - J: 7th/84
17a: 11th/ 99 pts,  TV: 13th/37 - J: 8th/62
18b: 18th / 24 pts,  TV: 17th/13 - J: 18th/11

Average: 11.4th / 17 Contestants, 96 pts
Average TV: 12th / 40 pts
Average J: 9.8th / 56 pts

Juries gave the green light back in 2016 and were not enough in 2017 but did help Georgia. I don't know if they will be enough for this year even though Georgia has some allies on the semi.

12. Australia

Q: 3/3
Current Streak: 3 Q
Running Order record: 9/12 Q , Current Streak: 2 NQ

16b: 1st/ 330 pts,   TV: 2nd/142 - J: 1st/188
17a: 6th/ 160 pts,  TV: 15th/21 - J: 2nd/139
18b: 4th / 212 pts,  TV: 7th/82 - J: 3rd/130

Average: 3.7th / 18 Contestants, 234 pts
Average TV: 8th / 81.7 pts
Average J: 2nd / 152.3 pts

Impressive record so far and a pattern is emerging! Juries are in love with Australia and the country never failed to finish out of the Top-3. Televoting is slightly different with 2017 being the top of the iceberg, rewarding Australia with just 21 of its 160 pts...For 2019 i have a risky prediction to make. I believe that they will score better with the public.

13. Iceland

Q: 7/14
Current Streak: 4 NQ
Running Order record: 6/12 Q , Current Streak: 2 NQ

14b: 8th/ 118 pts, TV: 9th/50 - J: 8th/68
15b: 15th/ 36  pts,  TV: 14th/21 - J: 15th/15
16b: 14th / 51 pts,   TV: 13th/24 - J: 13th/27
17a: 15th/ 60 pts,  TV: 14th/31 - J: 15th/29
18a: 19th / 15 pts,  TV: 19th/0 - J: 19th/15

Average: 14.2th / 17.6 Contestants, 56 pts
Average TV: 15.8th / 25.2 pts
Average J: 14th / 30.8 pts

The country runs one of its worst streaks, that will most probably end this year. Qualification isn't a matter, but the Juries are the ones that can bring them close to victory or take the dream away.

14. Estonia

Q: 6/15
Current Streak: 1 Q
Running Order record: 6/12 Q , Current Streak: 2 NQ

14a: 13th/ 74 pts, TV: 16th/13 - J: 10th/61
15a: 3rd/ 189  pts,  TV: 2nd/129 - J: 10th/60
16a: 18th / 24 pts,   TV: 16th/15 - J: 18th/9
17b: 14th/ 85 pts,  TV: 6th/69 - J: 17th/16
18a: 5th / 201 pts,  TV: 3rd/120 - J: 7th/81

Average: 10.6th / 17.4 Contestants, 114.6 pts
Average TV: 8.6th / 69.2 pts
Average J: 12.4th / 45.4 pts

Estonia is televoting dependant when it comes to qualification. Juries tend to keep them low. The worst placing for a Top-3 song on any Semi since 2014 belongs to Estonia in 2015 when it was 10th with the juries.

15. Portugal

Q: 4/12
Current Streak: 1 Q
Running Order record: 10/12 Q , Current Streak: 4 Q

14a: 10th/ 89 pts, TV: 7th/72 - J: 16th/17
15b: 14th/ 47  pts,  TV: 13th/24 - J: 13th/23
17a: 1st/ 370 pts,  TV: 1st/197 - J: 1st/173

Average: 8.3th / 17 Contestants, 168.7 pts
Average TV: 7th / 97.7 pts
Average J: 10th / 71 pts

Small sample that is skewed by Salvador Sobral's performance. My intuition says that this year Portugal will score better with juries.

16. Greece

Q: 10/12
Current Streak: 1 NQ
Running Order record: 5/11 Q , Current Streak: 3 NQ

14b: 9th/ 143 pts, TV: 5th/91 - J: 9th/52
15a: 6th/ 148  pts,  TV: 9th/59 - J: 4th/89
16a: 16th / 44 pts,   TV: 14th/2 - J: 16th/22
17a: 10th/ 115 pts,  TV: 9th/54 - J: 9th/61
18a: 14th / 81 pts,  TV: 10th/53 - J: 16th/28

Average: 11th / 17.2 Contestants, 106.2 pts
Average TV: 9.4th / 55.8 pts
Average J: 10.8th / 50.4 pts

Greece tends to do better with the televoters but lately lost that advantage. Curious to see where and how will score better this year.

17. San Marino

Q: 1/9
Current Streak: 4 NQ
Running Order record: 3/8 Q , Current Streak: 1 Q

14a: 12th/ 83 pts, TV: 8th/58 - J: 13th/25
15b: 16th/ 22  pts,  TV: 15th/16 - J: 17th/6
16a: 12th / 68 pts,   TV: 11th/49 - J: 17th/19
17b: 18th/ 1 pt,  TV: 18th/0 - J: 18th/1
18b: 17th / 28 pts,  TV: 16th/14 - J: 17th/14

Average: 15th / 17.4 Contestants, 40.4 pts
Average TV: 13.6th / 27.4 pts
Average J: 14.4th / 13 pts

The poorest results on the field. San Marino will definitely score better with televoters but don't think will be enough to secure a spot at the final.

I hope you find my analysis helpful. Stay tuned to Eurovisionbetsandpieces blogspot for the analysis of Semi Final 2.

EurovisionBetsandPieces: One Eurovision data analysis to rule them all...

I love Eurovision Contest and I love Eurovision betting but what I love the most is Eurovision stats!!! This is the most intriguing and fascinating part of the contest, in my opinion, and this is the part where you can dig deeper and find some diamonds waiting for you. It took me tens of hours just to collect the data that I will present to you. My goal is to create a reference post that could be used as a guide when placing your bets and give you some insight of how things are. I consider this my Eurovision betting legacy and a similar post will be available the following weeks for the Final.

For the moment my focus is on the Semi finals and will break down the post in 3 chapters ( Lord of the Rings pan intended, maybe because of the length of this post). Grab your pop corn and enjoy!

Chapter 1: 50% Televoting - 50% Juries voting era.

Since we do have available the split results of 2014 and 2015, I have implemented the current rules to those years as well to have a broader field. There are some diversifications, but we have more or less the same results with two major exceptions:

a. San Marino, sorry but with the current voting system, you have failed to qualify back in 2014 and you finished 12th with 83 points. So in theory you have 0/9 qualifications...Portugal instead has qualified as 10th with 89 points.

b. Azerbaijan's perfect record of qualifications would have been broken back in 2015. Azerbaijan finished 11th with 104 points and Malta has taken its spot as 9th with 116 points, 84 of them coming from the Juries (keep that thought).

No semi winner is affected by the change of the rules.

Having included 2014 and 2015, we have 10 semi finals in total that we can examine and draw some conclusions.

The first thing that I wanted to examine is the power that Juries and Televoting have individually on the final result.

Juries have helped 12 countries on a total of 173 to qualify, even though they have failed to land on the Top-10 of Televoting. There is only one country that was helped twice by the Juries and that is Malta. Malta was ranked twice as 12th in Televoting in 2014 and 2015 and both times finished 5th with the Juries.

If we remove the 11th place and the countries that marginally missed out, we only have 9 cases where Juries played a part in saving that country. The worst of all that finally made it to the final were Israel in 2016 and Denmark in 2017 that both finished 16th but Juries had them 4th and 5th. Australia completes Top-3  finishing 15th back in 2017 as well.

Now to the countries that were doomed by the Juries. The things here are marginal. Out of the 12 occasions, we only have one country that was affected twice, Finland in 2015 and 2017, though finishing 10th both times. If we remove the marginal 10th spot, we have only 5 times that a country failed to qualify even though was a Top-10 with the Televoting. On top of the list Estonia in 2017 finishing 6th. All the other misses come from the 8th and 9th place.

Televoting is proved to be slightly more helpful or damaging if you miss it. It has helped 18 times a country to qualify even though they were not in Top-10 with the Juries. In this category the king is Poland with 4 times and we have a proof that Polish diaspora is not a myth. Poland was 12th in 2014, 16th in 2015, 15th in 2016 and 11th in 2017 with the Juries, but made it to the final. Even last year that failed to qualify, was 10th in Televoting. The other country that was helped at least twice was Serbia, 14th in 2015 and 11th last year. Apart from Poland, Romania came back from the dead in 2017 finishing 15th but qualified anyway.

In this category, we have 11 times that a country finished 12th or worst and made it to the final!

Now the countries that were not helped by the televoters. Malta has been a victim of the public twice, 2017- 8th and 2018-5th! Netherlands was also heavily penalized back in 2015, ranked 5th by the Juries and 15th by the Televote! (Hans Pannecoucke myth busted!). The other country that suffered most was Latvia last year finishing 6th but failing to sail to the final.

In conclusion, we have had 30 times in a total of 173 that were helped to qualify, 12 by the juries and 18 by the televoters. There is another pattern that is also emerging the last two years. Only 4 songs were saved by the jurors, 1 in every semi on average, but at the same time, televoters saved 9 songs, with the 2nd Semi last year being the first ever that 3 songs have qualified even though were left out of the Juries Top-10 ( Serbia 11th, Denmark 12th, Hungary 13th) prevailing on Malta 5th, Latvia 6th and Romania 9th, that missed it. That gives an average of 2.25...

Chapter 2: Running order and streaks

The rule that changed back in 2013 and gives the producer the right to decide about the running order has definitely shaken things up, but also made the running order look like a self-fulfilling prophecy. If we take into consideration all the double semis, 22 in total, the spots with the worst qualifying records are:

3: 8/22
4: 8/22
11: 8/22

These are the only draws with less than 50% of success. Have you noticed something? That's right! No2 is missing! Has an 11/22 record along with spots 1, 5, 8.

Best overall record: No18 with a 12/14 and No14 with a 16/22.

If we go to the production decides era, we have 12 semis and things are slightly different here. No2 is the worst here with a 4/12 record followed by No17 with a 3/8 record and No3 and 4 following with 5/12.

These numbers prove that running order is not that important if you have a decent song. And if you have a decent song, the producers will help you to qualify.

There was another unwritten rule that applied to the results from 2008 until 2016 with the exception of the 2nd Semi in 2008: 4/6 of the the  last six songs in running order would qualify to the final helping to create the impression that running order is more important that the quality of the song itself. Since 2016 that rule is history

2016a: 2/6 qualified
2016b: 3/6
2017a: 2/6
2017b: 3/6
2018a: 3/6
2018b: 4/6

Impressive!

The current longest qualifying streaks come from No5 and No15 with 4 qualifications. No3, No7 and No18 have 3. The longest disqualifying streak: No4 with 4, followed by No2 and No16 with 3.

Chapter 3: How many points does a country need to qualify?

The magic number seems to be 110 points. We have had six occassions where a country made it to the final with less than 110 points, but the country with the highest score that failed to qualify was Romania last year with 107. We have only had five countries in these ten Semis that failed to qualify even though they had a triple digit score. Three of them were last year in Semi 2! Romania 107, Latvia 106 and Malta 101.

Because of the different amount of countries that are voting and participating on a semi, I have tried to find the percentage of  the maximum points a country can get and qualify to the final and that percentage seems to be 22.5% . If we apply that number to this year's semis the safety net for Semi 1 is 103 points and for Semi 2, 108 points.

The toughest semi would have been the 2nd in 2015( with the current rules applied)

10th Montenegro 105pts / 21.88% of maximum pts - 11th Azerbaijan 104pts / 21.67%

followed by the 1st Semi in 2014 (theoretically as well)

10th Portugal 89pts / 20.6% - 11th Albania 87pts / 20.14%

The biggest gap between the 10th and the 11th spot, Semi 1 in 2016

10th Croatia 133pts / 27.7% - 11th Bosnia 104 pts / 21.67%

I hope you find my post useful and helpful when you have to take your decisions. Would like to see your comments and thoughts and start a conversation about the importance of facts and numbers on the contest. In the next post I will provide useful stats from every country.

Eurovision 2019 : First Look at Semi Finals running order - Semi 2

Things are heating up and we are finally heading to the last few weeks before rehearsals. Eurovision in Concert was held last Saturday in Amsterdam and the odds have slightly shifted. Before going back to the winner market, let's see what we have in Semi Final 2.

Personally, i find the first Semi stronger but that doesn't mean that we don't have strong songs here as well. Let's see what we have

1. Armenia: Interesting song that will bring energy to the show. I Find it a little bit more aggressive. Producers didn't do any favors to Armenia and with a lack of allies, could definitely be a shock non qualifier. Odds above 2.25 definitely have value.

2. Ireland: Not many things to comment or add about Ireland. An amateurish song that will be a miracle if it will avoid bottom -3.

3. Moldova: In my opinion is not that bad but running order definitely does not help. Still has some slim chances to make it through, especially if Switzerland fails to stage its song.

4. Switzerland: Eurovision in Concert stopped the madness for Switzerland and odds went back to double digits. Nice song, can do well and has potential but we need to see the actual staging. 100% qualifier and probably Top-3 for the Semi but cannot immagine it beating Netherlands from #4.

5. Latvia: A nice radio song that I find hard to immagine how someone could stage it and make it qualify. Complete absence of emotions and energy. Will suffer coming after Switzerland. I won't write it off 100% yet but all odds are against it.

6. Romania: It seems that it has lost the touch with the contest. Last year their absolute qualifying record has ended and this year they are in course for a back to back disqualification. Country elements on a Romanian song is not the ideal combination for success. Has the allies to qualify but Top-10 televote score is highly improbable.

7. Denmark: Difficult year for them, being probably 3rd or 4th among the Scandinavian countries, but the good news for them is that Norway and Sweden are on the same Semi and they can have 20-25 guaranteed points. They need to find the extra 80-90 to secure qualification. Slightly cheesy but can get just enough points to finish 8th-10th in the semi. Rehearsals will enlighten us.

8. Sweden: Definite qualifier, most probably Top-3 for the Semi. Sweden will not face any problem to qualify and the only remaining thing to see is if the song can get any momentum for the final with that draw.

9. Austria: Unlike the majority of punters and commentators, i find the Austrian song interesting and with an intimate staging I wouldn't be shocked if it qualified to the final. Staging again is the key. Has potential for a Top-10 jury score.

10. Croatia: A country that used to send interesting songs and was achieving good results, has become a Eurovision pariah. Probably the worst song of the year. Worths a bet to finish last in the Semi.

11. Malta: My guilty pleasure for the year. Has the potential to do well but wouldn't trust the Maltese to stage it properly. Definite qualifier though. If Malta knows one thing is to get points from the juries. I don't know how they do it but it is effective. Add that to 4-7th placing in televoting and a Top-3 finishing is not out of context.

12. Lithuania: Not doomed but being sandwiched between Malta and Russia is not a good omen for Lithuania. Producers have been harsh with them but they have been more than lucky witht their allocation draw. They do have enough allies to be the shocker qualifier.

13. Russia: The biggest questionmark of the Semi. Can they make it? Will the staging be enough to give them the 2nd win in the contest that so desperately seeking the last 5-6 years? Can they build some momentum? Stay tunned...

14. Albania: Very interesting song that has the elements to secure an easy qualification but staging is almost always a problem with Albania. Definitely in the mix for qualification.

15. Norway: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde vibes from Norway this year. Can easily repeat a Denmark 2018 result but it could also fail to qualify a la Estonia 2017 or Iceland 2016. Luckily for them they have enough allies to secure their presence in the Final.

16. Netherlands: Sailing through the final. On a mission this year!

17. North Macedonia: The country that every year sends an interesting studio version song, but the quality of the live show is so bad that they fail to qualify. Their song this year has a message, but i find it to boring to hear it til the end. Not written off yet.

18. Azerbaijan: The first disqualification that they had last year, made them take the contest slightly more seriously and this year Azerbaijan is aiming again for a Top-10 spot. Will be interesting to see the song live and the show that they will stage.

Another EurovisionBetsandPieces post came to an end. Share your thoughts and views about the Semi and the pre-rehearsal season so far.
